Through this post, we are releasing the digital scans of Napier Museum Administration Report published in the years 1937-19461941 – Napier Museum Administration Report
The Napier Museum, situated in the city of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India, is one of the most important museums in the country. It was established in 1856 and is named after the former Governor of Madras, Sir Charles Napier. It is one of the oldest museums in India and features a diverse collection of artifacts, including sculptures, carvings, textiles, coins, and other objects that were used in ancient India.
From 1937 to 1946, yearly reports were written to provide insights into curatorial practices, visitor engagement, acquisitions, financial management, and evolving institutional priorities. Spanning the late colonial period and wartime years, they also reflect broader sociopolitical influences on cultural institutions. For historians, researchers, and heritage enthusiasts, these documents are a valuable window into the past operations and evolution of one of South India’s oldest museums.
These documents are digitized as part of the Madras University Library digitization project.
