Through this post, we are releasing the scan of The Acts and Decrees of the Synod of Diamper edited by Scaria Zacharia published by Indian Institute of Christian Studies in the year 1994.
The Acts and Decrees of the Synod of Diamper (1599) is an important document in the study of St. Thomas Christians of India, Portuguese colonization, colonial modernity and religious imperialism. The English text (1694) a faithful translation of the Portuguese version (1606) is reproduced with a critical introduction by Scaria Zacharia the editor of the volume. Rich in evidence subtlety of analysis, this study introduces the readers to the challenge and possibilities of understanding the text in the historical context. The introduction also includes the English translation of three chapters of Antonio Gouvea’s Jornada (1606) describing in detail the proceeding of the Synod.
