St. Thomas Christians, also known as Nasranis or Syrian Christians of India, are one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. They trace their origins to St. Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have arrived in Kerala, India, in 52 AD to spread Christianity.

പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിൽ ‍ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന വിശ്വപ്രശ‌സ്തനായ രാജ്യതന്ത്രജ്ഞനും നിയമജ്ഞനുമാണ്‌ സർ തോമസ് മോർ.(1478-1535). ലോർഡ് ചാൻസലർ പദവി വഹിച്ചിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം യുട്ടോപ്പ്യ എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന്റെ കർത്താവെന്ന നിലയിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഹെൻറി എട്ടാമന്റെ സഭാവിരുദ്ധപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ പ്രതികരിച്ചതിന്റെ പേരിൽ രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വം വരിച്ച തോമസ് മോറിനെ ആഗോള കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭ വിശുദ്ധനായി വണങ്ങുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രമാക്കി രചിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു നാടകമാണ് ഈ കൃതി.

The “Song of Thomas Ramban,” also known as “Ramban Pattu,” is a traditional Malayalam ballad that narrates the missionary journey of St. Thomas the Apostle in India. It details his arrival at Cranganore (Kodungallur), the establishment of seven churches, the miracles he performed, and his eventual martyrdom in Mylapore (modern-day Chennai). The song holds significant cultural importance among the Saint Thomas Christian community in Kerala.

Henri Hosten, a Jesuit historian, published “The Song of Thomas Ramban” in Darjeeling, which included a translation by T. K. Joseph and a discussion of the manuscripts. This work provided valuable insights into the traditions surrounding St. Thomas in India.”Song of Thomas Ramban” has been republished in various works, including George Menachery’s “Indian Church History Classics.

Through this post we are releasing the scan of the book, India in 1500 AD – The Narratives of Joseph the Indian written by Antony Vallavanthara released in the year 1984.

Shortly after Vasco da Gama reached India by sea in 1498, an Indian priest named Joseph boarded a ship in India that was bound for Europe. Joseph’s tales of his native India were recorded by a European. In his narratives, he described the socio-economic and cultural life of India as well as the geography of many places including Cranganore, Calcutta, Cochin, Gujarat, Cambay (ancient name of  Khambhat), and others. During the 16th century, some 20 editions of Joseph’s narratives were published in Latin, Italian, German, French and Dutch. In India in 1500 AD – The Narratives of Joseph the Indian, Antony Vallavanthara gives a critical study of the rare historical documents that lay behind the narratives.
