1964 – Captain Blood – Rafael Sabatini

Through this post we are releasing the scan of the book, ‘Captain Blood‘ by Rafael Sabatini. This is an abridgment by E F Dodd of the original book and belongs to the series, ‘Macmillan’s Stories to Remember‘.

Captain Blood

The original book is a classic novel, involving rebellion, ships, piracy and adventure. It has been retold for children by E F Dodd using a simpler vocabulary. Elizabeth Frances Dodd was one of the editors who made such abridgments during the 1960s and 1970s for Macmillan. These retellings were released in two series, Junior (for primary and middle school) and Senior (for high school). The books were used as readers for non-detailed study in schools in India.

1920 – The Snow Queen – Hans Andersen

Through this post we are releasing the scan of the book The Snow Queen by Hans Andersen, published in 1920. This book seems to have been used as a reader for high school classes in Kerala.

The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen is a Christmas fairy tale, written by the famous Danish story teller Hans Andersen (also spelled Anderson). The story centres on two children, Karl and Gerda, and the theme is the fight between good and evil. The title refers to the evil character, the Snow Queen. In the original story, Karl’s name is Kai. There are illustrations on most pages of the book.

Through this post we are releasing the scan of the book The Mystery of Baptism, written by Paul Blaize Kadicheeni. This is a doctoral dissertation submitted by the author to the faculty of Theology at St Thomas Aquinas Pontifical Seminary at Rome.

The Mystery of Baptism

The book is divided into 3 parts, comprising a total of 8 chapters. The dissertation is on the subject of Christian baptism, and studies the work of the mediaeval  Nestorian patriarch Timothy II on the East Syrian concept of baptism.

Through this post we are releasing the scans of two books – History of Christianity in Canara, Vol 1 and Vol 2, written by Severine Silva.

History of Christianity in Canara – Vol 2

These books give a detailed introduction on the arrival and growth of Christianity, specifically the Roman Catholic Church, in Canara (or South West Karnataka) from the 15th century up to the end of the 19th century. There are 14 chapters, out of which 4 deal with the religious persecution under Tipu Sultan.

The contents are supported by detailed footnotes in almost every page. Several documents relating to the Catholic Church, the British rulers of Mysore etc are included in the appendices in Volume 1. Volume 2 consists entirely of letters, treaties, sannad, decrees, firmans and other documents relating to this community from the 14th century onwards. These documents include a few from Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan (in English translation) and also from the Maharaja of Coorg, the British Resident in Mysore, the British Governor of Madras, etc. Appendix no 75 is notable in giving a description of the Four Castes as it existed in Canara. Some matters of ecclesiastical disagreement are also treated in a chapter in Vol 1 and an appendix in Vol 2. Many of the documents are of significance for historical research. A bibliography is provided at the end of Vol 2.

Through this post we are releasing the scan of the book The Synod of Diamper by Jonas Thaliath. It is a reprint of the original edition published in Rome in 1958.

There are six chapters in the book, dealing with the Synod of Diamper (Udayamperoor) . Following a description of the historical background, the main chapters deal with the convocation of the Synod, and the question of the authority of Archbishop Menezes. There are detailed footnotes in each page.

The appendices list the manuscript copies and editions of the Acts of the Synod of Diamper in various languages (Malayalam, Portuguese, Latin, Italian, French, Spanish, German, English).
