1925 – Bharathanuvarnanam – T Ganapati Sastri

Through this post we are releasing the scan of the Sanskrit book, Bharatanuvarnanam, by T Ganapathi Sastri.

Bharathanuvarnanam

This book is a description of the geography, history, epic figures, people and customs of India, written in Sanskrit by the author. The author’s preface in the first edition of 1904 (missing in this 1925 copy) mentions that it was intended as a reader for European students of Sanskrit, as suggested by Prof Sylvain Levi of France.

The author was Principal of the Govt Sanskrit College, Thiruvananthapuram during the Sree Mulam Tirunal era, and was famous for discovering the manuscripts of 13 lost plays by the classical Sanskrit playwright, Bhasa in a remote Kerala village. He also established the Manuscripts Library of the University of Travancore.

The book was made available for digitization by Achuthsankar S Nair.

Evergreen Fables

The 15 fables are taken from ‘Aesop’s Fables’ and retold in simple English for very young readers. The moral of the tale is given at the end of each fable. Important words and phrases appearing in the story are listed after each story for children to learn.

Though the book is not dated, the publisher L J Fernandez & Sons, Trivandrum were active during the 1950s, and this book may be assumed to belong to the same period.

Through this post we are releasing the scan of the book Mahatma Gandhi and Bihar – Some Reminiscences, published in 1949. It was written by Babu Rajendra Prasad, who later became President of India. He was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi for more than 30 years.

This book is a collection of the author’s reminiscences of Gandhi’s activities in Bihar, including the satyagraha at Champaran and other events relating to India’s independence movement. The relief efforts in connection with the Bihar earthquake of 1934 are also described, as well as the Hindu – Muslim tensions.
