Through this post we are releasing the scan of the book, India in 1500 AD – The Narratives of Joseph the Indian written by Antony Vallavanthara released in the year 1984.
Shortly after Vasco da Gama reached India by sea in 1498, an Indian priest named Joseph boarded a ship in India that was bound for Europe. Joseph’s tales of his native India were recorded by a European. In his narratives, he described the socio-economic and cultural life of India as well as the geography of many places including Cranganore, Calcutta, Cochin, Gujarat, Cambay, and others. During the 16th century, some 20 editions of Joseph’s narratives were published in Latin, Italian, German, French and Dutch. In India in 1500 AD – The Narratives of Joseph the Indian, Antony Vallavanthara gives a critical study of the rare historical documents that lay behind the narratives.
