This specific volume focuses entirely on the Alleppey (Alappuzha) District in Kerala, taking an integrated look at demographic patterns, occupational adjustments, and everyday local traditions. Out of 35 total village surveys taken up across Kerala, this part presents the deep-dive monographs of four specific centres chosen for their distinct socioeconomic and ecological characteristics:
Bharanikavu: Selected to study traditional paddy (rice) cultivation.
Kadapra: Selected to look closely at sugar-cane cultivation.
Muttar: Selected to study the concentration and social structure of the Velan community.
Prakkad: Selected to observe kari land (acid peat soil unique to Kuttanad) cultivation practices.
