Abstract
This book traces Kerala’s development through different historical phases, beginning with early settlements and legendary traditions, followed by the rise of ancient kingdoms such as the Cheras, and the growth of a rich cultural and maritime heritage. It highlights Kerala’s long-standing connections with foreign traders, including Arabs and Europeans, which significantly influenced its economy and society. A major focus of the work is on the medieval and colonial periods, describing the arrival of the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, and the political and economic transformations that followed. It also examines social structures like caste and land relations, along with the emergence of reform movements that challenged social inequalities.
