"An English–Malayalam Dictionary" by Tobias Zacharias, printed at the Basel Mission Press, Mangalore, and published in 1907, represents one of the most ambitious lexicographical projects in the history of Malayalam. Spanning more than 1,400 pages, it was the largest English–Malayalam dictionary produced up to that time. In the preface, Zacharias notes that the existing dictionaries were inadequate for meeting the growing importance of English in education, administration, and public life. To address this gap, he compiled a comprehensive reference work designed to serve both students and scholars.
A distinctive feature of the dictionary is its adoption of the “grouping” or “paragraph system,” whereby related words and expressions are arranged under a principal headword rather than being listed separately in strict alphabetical order. This method enabled users to understand the relationships between words and their various derivatives more effectively. The scale of the work is remarkable: according to the compiler’s own count, it contains definitions and explanations for 22,920 leading words, 29,231 derivative words, 13,841 compound or quasi-compound expressions, and 6,225 phrases, amounting to a total of 72,217 entries.
