ഹെർമൻ ഗുണ്ടർട്ട് മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്ത The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Translated into Malayalam എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം 1868-ൽ മംഗളൂരുവിലെ ബാസൽ മിഷൻ പ്രസിൽ അച്ചടിച്ചു പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. മലയാളത്തിലെ ബൈബിൾ വിവർത്തനചരിത്രത്തിലും അച്ചടി സംസ്കാരത്തിൻ്റെ വികാസത്തിലും ഈ കൃതി ഒരു സുപ്രധാന നാഴികക്കല്ലായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ബൈബിളിലെ ആശയങ്ങളും പദപ്രയോഗങ്ങളും മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള അടിസ്ഥാനശ്രമങ്ങൾ ഇതിനുമുമ്പ് ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ബെയിലി നടത്തിയിരുന്നതിനാൽ, ഗുണ്ടർട്ടിൻ്റെ പ്രവർത്തനത്തിന് അവ സഹായകമായി. ബെയിലിയുടെ വിവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ പൊതുവേ ചന്ദ്രക്കല ( ് ) ഉപയോഗം പരിമിതമായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ, ഗുണ്ടർട്ട് അതിനെ വ്യാപകമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചു. ഇതുവഴി ഭാഷയുടെ ഉച്ചാരണസ്വഭാവം കൂടുതൽ കൃത്യമായി പ്രതിഫലിക്കുകയും ലിപിരീതിയിൽ കൂടുതൽ വ്യക്തത കൈവരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ വിവർത്തനത്തിലെ ഭാഷാശൈലിയിൽ ഉത്തര മലബാറിലെ സംസാരമലയാളത്തിൻ്റെ സ്വാധീനം വ്യക്തമായി കാണാം; ആ പ്രദേശവുമായി ഗുണ്ടർട്ടിനുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ദീർഘകാല ബന്ധവും ഭാഷാപരിചയവും ഇതിന് കാരണമായിരിക്കാം. ഭാഷാപരവും ലിപിപരവും ഗ്രന്ഥസംവിധാനപരവുമായ ഈ സവിശേഷതകൾ ഗുണ്ടർട്ടിൻ്റെ പുതിയ നിയമത്തെ പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ മലയാള ഗദ്യത്തിൻ്റെയും അച്ചടി സംസ്കാരത്തിൻ്റെയും വളർച്ചയിൽ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സംഭാവനയായി മാറ്റുന്നു.

The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Translated into Malayalam by Hermann Gundert, was printed at the Basel Mission Press, Mangalore, and published in 1868. This work represents a significant milestone in the history of Malayalam biblical literature and printing. Gundert’s translation benefited from the earlier efforts of Benjamin Bailey, whose pioneering Malayalam Bible translations had already established a foundation for rendering biblical concepts into the language. Unlike Bailey’s versions, which generally avoided the use of the "chandrakala" ( ് ), Gundert employed this symbol extensively, resulting in greater orthographic precision and a closer representation of spoken Malayalam. The language used in the translation reflects the linguistic characteristics of Northern Malabar, a region with which Gundert was deeply familiar through his missionary and scholarly activities. Another notable feature of the work is its systematic citation of scriptural references, demonstrating a high level of editorial and scholarly care. These linguistic, orthographic, and textual features make Gundert’s New Testament an important contribution to the development of Malayalam prose and print culture in the nineteenth century.
