The book *Pointed and Unpointed Romanic Alphabets Compared in Six Versions* serves as evidence of an attempt by the Basel Mission to Romanize Dravidian languages in order to make printing and related processes easier. Although this book, published in 1859, contains 62 pages, only 10 pages actually contain content. The work analyzes and compares six different Romanic versions of Luke 14:18–20 from the Bible in an effort to demonstrate how effective Roman-based scripts could be for Indian languages. It proposes the Romanization of Malayalam, Canarese (present-day Kannada), Tamil, Telugu, and Hindustani (today’s Hindi and Urdu). However, no records have been found explaining why the Basel Mission later abandoned this effort.
