The first English–Malayalam dictionary was prepared by Benjamin Bailey and published in 1849, marking a major milestone in the history of Malayalam lexicography. As the earliest English–Malayalam dictionary available to the public, it served for a long time as the primary reference source for Malayalam speakers seeking to learn English and understand its vocabulary. However, since it was the first work of its kind, it cannot be considered a complete or ultimate guide free from errors or limitations. Many words were omitted from the dictionary, particularly adverbs, because Malayalam adverbial forms can often be created by adding suffixes such as “ആയി” or “ഒടെ” to adjectives and substantives. Despite these omissions, Bailey’s work played a crucial role in language learning and translation during a period when educational resources were scarce. As the importance and influence of the English language continued to grow in Kerala, the need for more comprehensive and accurate English–Malayalam dictionaries also increased, leading to the development of revised and expanded lexicons in later years.

ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ബെയിലി അച്ചടിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് – മലയാളം നിഘണ്ടു ആണ് A Dictionary, English and Malayalim എന്ന പുസ്തകം. ഇത് 1849-ൽ ആണ് പ്രസിദ്ധികരിച്ചത്. മലയാളത്തിൽ " ആയി" "യുടെ" പോലെയുള്ള അനുബന്ധങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഇംഗ്ലിഷിലെ പല ക്രിയാവിശേഷണങ്ങളും രചയിതാവ് ഒഴിവാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ദീർഘകാലത്തേക്കു മലയാളികൾക്ക് ലഭ്യമായിരുന്ന ഒരേയൊരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്-മലയാളം നിഘണ്ടു ഇതായിരുന്നു; 1850കൾക്ക് ശേഷം ഇംഗ്ലീഷിനു പ്രാധാന്യം കൂടി വന്നിരുന്ന സമയത്ത് മലയാളികൾക്ക് മലയാളം-ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് നിഘണ്ടുവിനെക്കാൾ പ്രയോജനപ്രദം ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്-മലയാളം നിഘണ്ടുവായിരുന്നു. ഈ നിഘണ്ടു ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ആദ്യത്തെ കൃതിയായതിനാൽ ഇത് ഭാഷയുടെ പരിപൂർണമായ നിഘണ്ടുവാണ് എന്നു പറയാൻ കഴിയില്ല.
