പുതിയ നിയമം സമ്പൂർണമായും മലയാളത്തിലെക്കു പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തി പ്രസിദ്ധികരിച്ച ആദ്യ പുസ്തകം 1829-ൽ ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ബെയിലി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച പുതിയ നിയമമാണ്. അറുനൂറിൽപരം താളുകൾ ഉള്ള ഈ പുസ്തകം മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തിയ ആദ്യ ബൈബിളായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൻ്റെ ഭാഷാശൈലിക്കും അച്ചടിരീതികൾക്കും ചില പ്രത്യേക സവിശേഷതകൾ കാണാം. പൂർണ്ണവിരാമത്തിനുപകരം (*) എന്ന ചിഹ്നമാണ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇന്നത്തെ മലയാളലിപിയിൽ സാധാരണമായ ഏ, ഓ കാരങ്ങൾ ഇതിൽ കാണുന്നില്ല. മലയാള അക്കങ്ങളാണ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ൻ്റ, റ്റ എന്നീ അക്ഷരങ്ങൾ അക്കാലത്തെ പ്രയോഗരീതിപോലെ തന്നെ വ്യക്തമായി വേർതിരിച്ച് എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നു. സ്വരാക്ഷരങ്ങൾ ചേരാത്ത വ്യഞ്ജനാക്ഷരങ്ങളെല്ലാം കൂട്ടക്ഷരങ്ങളായി കണക്കാക്കിയിരുന്നതിനാൽ, ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിൽ കൂട്ടക്ഷരങ്ങളുടെ ബാഹുല്യം ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.

The first book to publish a complete translation of the New Testament into Malayalam was the New Testament published in 1829 by Benjamin Bailey. This book, which contained more than six hundred pages, is considered the first Bible translated into Malayalam. The language style and printing methods of this book had several distinctive features. Instead of a full stop, the symbol (*) was used. The vowel signs corresponding to today’s Malayalam letters “ഏ” (ē) and “ഓ” (ō) were absent. Malayalam numerals were used throughout. The letters “ൻ്റ” and “റ്റ” were written distinctly, following the usage conventions of that period. Since all consonants not joined with vowel signs were treated as conjunct letters, the text is notable for its extensive use of conjunct consonants.
