കേരളത്തിൽ അച്ചടിച്ച ആദ്യ മലയാളപുസ്തകമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥമാണ് 'ചെറു പൈതങ്ങൾക്ക ഉപകാരാർത്ഥം ഇംക്ലീശിൽ നിന്ന പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തിയ കഥകൾ'. ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ബെയിലി പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തിയെടുത്ത ഈ കൃതി കോട്ടയം സി.എം.എസ് പ്രെസ്സിൽ അച്ചടിച്ച് 1824-ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതാണ്. ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ബെയിലിയുടെ 1829ലെ ബൈബിൾ അല്ല, 1824-ൽ ബെഞ്ചമിൻ ബെയിലി തന്നെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ നിന്ന് പരിഭാഷ ചെയ്ത് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച “ചെറു പൈതങ്ങൾക്ക ഉപകാരാർത്ഥം ഇംക്ലീശിൽ നിന്ന പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തിയ കഥകൾ” എന്ന പുസ്തകമാണ് കേരളത്തിൽ അച്ചടിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ മലയാളപുസ്തകം എന്ന് 1980-ൽ ആണ് സ്ഥിതീകരിച്ചത് . ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് മ്യൂസിയം ലൈബ്രറിയിലെ കാറ്റലോഗ് സൂക്ഷ്മമായി പരിശോധിച്ചപ്പോൾ വളരെ അവിചാരിതമായാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം കണ്ടെത്തിയത് എന്ന് ജോർജ് ഇരുമ്പയം മാതൃഭൂമിയിൽ എഴുതിയ ലേഖനത്തിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇതോടെ കേരളത്തിൽ അച്ചടിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ മലയാളപുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം 5 വർഷം പുറകോട്ട് പോയി. ലളിതമായി പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തിയ എട്ടോളം കഥകളാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ അടങ്ങിയിട്ടുള്ളത്.

Cherupaithangalkk Upakarartham Englishil ninnu Paribhashappeduthiya Kadhakal (Stories translated from English for the benefit of young children) is known as the first ever Malayalam book to be printed in Kerala. Published in 1824, the stories were translated and compiled by Benjamin Bailey and was printed at C.M.S Press, Kottayam. It was only in 1980 that it was established that the first Malayalam book printed in Kerala was not the 1829 Bible, but Cherupaithangalkk Upakarartham Englisil ninnu Paribhashappeduthiya kadhakal (Stories Translated from English for the Benefit of Young Children). George Irumbayam writes in an article published in Mathrubhumi that this book was discovered quite unexpectedly while carefully examining the catalogue of the British Museum Library. With this discovery, the history of the first Malayalam book printed in Kerala has been pushed back by five years. The book contains about eight stories that have been translated and adapted in a simple manner.
