കേരളത്തിലെ ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങളും കേട്ടുകേൾവികളും ഉൾച്ചേർതു വിവരിക്കുന്ന കൃതിയാണ് കേരളോല്പത്തി. ഹെർമാൻ ഗുണ്ടർട്ട് ശേഖരിച്ചു പ്രസിദ്ധികരിച്ച ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൻ്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ പതിപ്പ് ലിത്തോഗ്രാഫി അഥവാ കല്ലച്ചുപയോഗിച്ച് അച്ചടിച്ചതാണ്. അതിൻ്റെ രണ്ടാം പതിപ്പ് 1868-ൽ ലെറ്റർ പ്രെസ്സിൽ അച്ചടിച്ചതാണ്. രണ്ടച്ചിൽ തീർത്തത് എന്നതിനപ്പുറം ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ചു വർഷം കൊണ്ട് മലയാളലിപിക്കുണ്ടായ മാറ്റമാണ് ഈ രണ്ട് പതിപ്പിലൂടെ നമ്മൾക്ക് കാണാൻ സാധിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യ പതിപ്പിൽ ഏ കാരവും ഓ കാരവും ഒട്ടും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എന്നൽ രണ്ടാം പതിപ്പിൽ ഇത് രണ്ടും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വാക്കുകളുടെ അറ്റത്ത് ചന്ദ്രക്കല, വാക്കുകൾ തമ്മിൽ ഇടവിടുന്നത്, പൂർണ്ണവിരാമത്തിൻ്റെ ഉപയോഗം എന്നിവയെല്ലാം രംഗപ്രവേശം ചെയ്തത് രണ്ടാം പതിപ്പിലാണ്. ആദ്യ പതിപ്പിലെ ചില്ല്കൂട്ടക്ഷരങ്ങൾ രണ്ടാം പതിപ്പിൽ ഇല്ല.

Keralolppatti is a work that narrates the legends and traditional accounts of Kerala. The first edition of this book, collected and published by Hermann Gundert, was printed using lithography, or stone printing. Its second edition, printed in 1868, used the letterpress method. More than just representing two different printing techniques, these editions reveal the transformation that Malayalam script underwent over a span of twenty-five years. In the first edition, the vowel signs for “ē” and “ō” were not used at all, whereas both appear in the second edition. Features such as the use of the chandrakala ( ് ) at the ends of words, spacing between words, and the use of the full stop were all introduced in the second edition. The chillu conjunct letters found in the first edition are absent in the second edition.
