'Jnanakeerthanangal' (2nd edition, 1854), published by the CMS Press, Kottayam, is a collection of Malayalam Christian hymns that represents an early phase in the development of Malayalam Christian devotional literature. The volume preserves a body of hymnody that predates the period of prominent Christian hymn writers, thereby documenting some of the earliest extant Malayalam Christian songs. Although most of the hymns are no longer in common use, a few, including “Bhulokathulla Sarvare…,” “Nithyanaya Yehovaye…,” and “Daivame Nin Snehathode…,” have survived in modified forms and continue to be sung. Many of the hymns appear to be translations or adaptations of English devotional songs. The volume is also significant for its linguistic and orthographic features, including the absence of the chandrakkala, and the use of older orthographic forms for words ending in 'ഈ' . As such, the work serves as an important source for the study of early Malayalam Christian hymnody and nineteenth-century Malayalam printing and writing practices.
