ഒരആയിരം പഴഞ്ചൊൽ എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം 1850-ൽ തലശ്ശേരിയിലെ ബാസൽ മിഷൻ പ്രസ്സിൽ ലിത്തോഗ്രഫിക് രീതിയിൽ അച്ചടിച്ച കൃതിയാണ്. ഗുണ്ടർട്ട് കേരളത്തിൽ ഏകദേശം പതിനഞ്ച് വർഷക്കാലം വിവിധ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ സഞ്ചരിച്ച് ശേഖരിച്ച ആയിരത്തോളം മലയാള പഴഞ്ചൊല്ലുകളുടെ സമാഹാരമാണ് ഇതിൻ്റെ ഉള്ളടക്കം. മലയാള ജനജീവിതം, സാമൂഹികാനുഭവങ്ങൾ, നാടൻ ജ്ഞാനം, സാംസ്കാരിക മൂല്യങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയുടെ പ്രതിഫലനമായി ഈ പഴഞ്ചൊല്ലുകൾ നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. ഭാഷാപരമായും ലിപിപരമായും ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. “ഈ” എന്ന അക്ഷരത്തിൻ്റെ രണ്ട് രൂപങ്ങളും കാണപ്പെടുന്നുവെങ്കിലും “ഈ” എന്ന രൂപമാണ് കൂടുതലായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ലിത്തോഗ്രഫിക് അച്ചടി രീതിയുടെ സ്വഭാവം മൂലം കൈയെഴുത്തുപ്രതികളുടെ മാതൃക പിന്തുടർന്ന ഈ കൃതിയിൽ വാക്കുകൾക്കിടയിൽ ഇടവിടങ്ങളോ മറ്റ് ചിഹ്നങ്ങളോ പൊതുവെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. അതിനാൽ, മലയാള പഴഞ്ചൊല്ലുകളുടെ ആദ്യകാല സമാഹാരങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥം ഭാഷാചരിത്രം, ലിപിവികാസം, ജനസാഹിത്യം, അച്ചടി സംസ്കാരം എന്നിവയുടെ പഠനത്തിന് വിലപ്പെട്ട സ്രോതസ്സാണ്.

This work (ഒരആയിരം പഴഞ്ചൊൽ ) was printed in 1850 at the Basel Mission Press, Thalassery, using the lithographic printing method. The book contains a collection of approximately one thousand Malayalam proverbs gathered by Hermann Gundert during his extensive travels across Kerala over a period of nearly fifteen years. These proverbs reflect the everyday life, social experiences, traditional wisdom, and cultural values of the Malayalam-speaking people. The work is also significant from linguistic and orthographic perspectives. Although two forms of the letter “Ī” occur in the text, the modern form is used more frequently. Owing to the nature of lithographic printing, which closely reproduced contemporary handwriting, the text generally does not employ spaces between words or punctuation marks. As one of the earliest systematic collections of Malayalam proverbs, the book serves as an important source for the study of Malayalam language history, script development, folklore, and early print culture.
