'Life of Dr. H. Gundert' (1896) is the earliest known biography of Hermann Gundert in Malayalam, published three years after his death by the Basel Mission Book and Tract Depository and printed at the Basel Mission Press, Mangalore. The work is anonymous, and its authorship is generally attributed to a collective effort of Basel Mission missionaries. Intended as a commemorative account, the biography chronicles Gundert’s life, missionary activities, and scholarly achievements, with particular emphasis on his contributions to Malayalam language studies, education, lexicography, translation, and print culture. As one of the earliest examples of biographical writing in Malayalam, the book serves not only as a tribute to Gundert’s legacy but also as an important historical source that reflects missionary perspectives and the intellectual and cultural transformations of nineteenth-century Kerala.
