A Selection of Official Malayalam Documents എന്നത് കേരളത്തിലെ നിയമപരമായ രേഖകളുടെ ഒരു സമാഹാരമാണ്. ഇത് ലിസ്റ്റൺ ഗാർത്ത്വേറ്റ് സമാഹരിച്ചതും 1876-ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചതുമാണ്. ലിത്തോഗ്രഫി രീതിയിൽ അച്ചടിച്ച ഈ കൃതി മലയാള ലിപിയുടെയും അച്ചടി സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യയുടെയും ചരിത്രത്തിൽ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥാനമാണ് കൈവരിക്കുന്നത്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഇന്ത്യയിലെ സിവിൽ സർവൻ്റുമാർക്ക് ഒരു റഫറൻസ് ഗ്രന്ഥമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാനാണ് ഈ സമാഹാരം തയ്യാറാക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിൽ നാല് വ്യത്യസ്ത കൈയെഴുത്ത് ശൈലികൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. പുസ്തകത്തിലുടനീളം മലയാള അക്കങ്ങൾക്ക് പകരം അറബിക് അക്കങ്ങളാണ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് എന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. കൂടാതെ, “ഏ” “ഓ” കാരങ്ങൾ ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിൽ കാണുന്നില്ല. ഇതിലൂടെ ആധുനിക മലയാള ലിപിവ്യവസ്ഥ രൂപംകൊള്ളുന്നതിന് മുൻപുള്ള ഘട്ടത്തെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള സൂചനകൾ ലഭിക്കുന്നു. ഈ സവിശേഷതകളാൽ ഭരണചരിത്രത്തിനൊപ്പം മലയാള പാലിയോഗ്രഫിയുടെയും ലിപിവികാസത്തിൻ്റെയും പഠനത്തിനും ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥം ഏറെ പ്രാധാന്യമർഹിക്കുന്നു.

A Selection of Official Malayalam Documents is a collection of legal documents from Kerala compiled by Liston Garthwaite. Published in 1876, the work was printed using lithography, making it an important source in the history of Malayalam script and printing technology. The collection was intended to serve as a reference manual for the civil servants of British India. The book contains four distinct styles of handwriting, reflecting the diversity of official Malayalam writing practices of the period. It is also notable for its use of Arabic numerals instead of traditional Malayalam numerals throughout the text. In addition, the vowel forms representing the “ē” and “ō” sounds are absent in the book, indicating an earlier stage in the development of modern Malayalam orthography. Because of these features, the volume is considered valuable not only for administrative history but also for the study of Malayalam paleography and the evolution of the script.
