A Dictionary of High and Colloquial Malayalim and English, compiled by Benjamin Bailey, is regarded as the first comprehensive Malayalam–English dictionary. Printed at the CMS Press, Kottayam, and published in 1846, the work played a crucial role in the standardization and study of Malayalam vocabulary, usage, and orthography. By documenting both “high” literary Malayalam and colloquial forms of speech, the dictionary reflected the linguistic diversity of nineteenth-century Kerala while also making the language more accessible to European missionaries and scholars.
