'Pazhamcholmala' (1845), compiled by Hermann Gundert, is an early and important collection of regional Malayalam proverbs, printed by lithography at the Basel Mission Press, Mangalore. The work was compiled with the dual purpose of preserving indigenous proverbial traditions and utilizing them as a means of explaining Christian religious teachings to Malayalam-speaking communities. Divided into three parts, the book reflects the linguistic and orthographic characteristics of nineteenth-century Malayalam. Notably, the letters and sounds corresponding to ഏ and ഓ, along with their associated symbols, are absent from the text, indicating an earlier stage in the standardization of Malayalam script. The exclusive use of Malayalam numerals further enhances its historical significance. As a collection of local wisdom expressed through proverbs, 'Pazhamcholmala' provides valuable insights into the cultural landscape of Kerala while also illustrating the role of missionary scholarship in the documentation, interpretation, and transmission of Malayalam language and folklore during the nineteenth century.
