A Grammar of the Malayalim Language by Rev. Joseph Peet is one of the earliest Malayalam grammar books written in English and holds a significant place in the history of the Malayalam language. The book was intended to assist two groups of readers: those who wished to learn Malayalam out of personal interest and British officers who needed to acquire the language in order to work in the region. Peet hoped that these officers would learn Malayalam effectively and contribute to the spread of European education by teaching through the native language. The grammar was structured in a manner similar to contemporary English grammar books, making it easier for English speakers to understand Malayalam. To improve comprehension, the author analsyed and divided the language into grammatical components comparable to those found in English grammar.
