“Dissertation the Second on the Malayalma Language” is an essay written by F. W. Ellis about the history and language of Kerala. Written in 1815, the essay uses Tamil script and a Romanized form of Malayalam. Drawing on works such as Keralolpathi, the dissertation presents a picture of Kerala that even Malayalis themselves have largely forgotten. The work discusses the small kingdoms that existed in Kerala, their systems of administration, and the languages spoken there. It clearly explains how Malayalam came to be recognized as a distinct language, as well as the roles played by Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan and the Kerala society of that time in this development. The dissertation also compares the varieties of Tamil (Chentamil and Koduntamil) with the varieties of Sanskrit. In addition, it analyzes several writing systems used for Malayalam, such as Kolezhuthu and Vattezhuthu, along with different linguistic usages and expressions.
