Rajan published in the year 1987<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10895\" src=\"https:\/\/gpura.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/newspaper.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2102\" height=\"3120\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"728\">Leave the Newspaper Free\u00a0is a bold and uncompromising public complaint to the Press Council of India by veteran journalist P. Rajan, then Assistant Editor of <em data-start=\"405\" data-end=\"418\">Mathrubhumi<\/em>, one of Kerala\u2019s most respected Malayalam dailies. In this pamphlet, Rajan documents serious allegations of managerial interference, editorial intimidation, and erosion of journalistic autonomy within the newspaper. Issues he claims undermine both the public trust and the democratic role of the press.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"1124\">Through this complaint, Rajan challenges the control exerted by shareholders and directors over editorial staff, despite those editors having played a foundational role in building the paper\u2019s reputation. He equates this interference to an ethical hijacking of the institution and demands that <em data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1037\">Mathrubhumi<\/em> be restructured as a public trust, free from political and corporate manipulation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1433\">A fierce defender of press freedom, Rajan\u2019s document recounts his past clashes with government censorship, including his arrest during the Emergency for publishing anti-government materials. The pamphlet also highlights his pioneering work in legal journalism, social justice advocacy, and feminist writing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1435\" data-end=\"1703\">Blending personal testimony with sharp political critique, <em data-start=\"1494\" data-end=\"1520\">Leave the Newspaper Free<\/em> is not just a protest against one media house, it is a call for structural reform in Indian journalism, demanding that newspapers serve the people, not private or political interests.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1412\">The book was made available for digitization by S.
